Lewis Hinchman to Be Named Professor Emeritus at Clarkson University

Lewis P. Hinchman will be named professor emeritus at Clarkson University's 116th Commencement on Sunday, May 10. Hinchman is being honored for 28 years of exemplary service to the University. Hinchman

Hinchman, a political science professor, is currently a Fulbright Scholar, teaching at the University of Bonn in Germany from April to August.

He has been an exemplary educator in the School of Arts & Sciences, influencing generations of students as a professor, mentor and advisor, teaching courses in comparative politics, political philosophy, American politics, and environmental policy.

Hinchman has contributed important research in his field, publishing on topics dealing with theory, philosophy and policy, and authoring or co-editing three books focusing on social science, theory and influential political philosophers.

He has published numerous essays in books and peer-reviewed journals, published articles in English and German, and translated scholarly essays from German and Spanish. He served as editor for the Hannah Arendt Newsletter and as referee for the National Endowment for the Humanities and for 10 professional journals.

Hinchman was a visiting scholar at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia, and a visiting professor at the Institute for Political Science at Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg, Germany. He has received four grants from the National Endowment of Humanities and three grants from the Fulbright Commission.

Hinchman served on many University committees, including the departmental tenure and promotion committee, the faculty senate, the teaching improvement committee, and the curriculum and academic policy committee.
