Jarrod D. Persun, a graduate student in the Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering at Clarkson University, has received the 2009 Katharine and Bryant Mather Scholarship from American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) International.Clarkson University Grad Student Receives ASTM Scholarship

The scholarship, sponsored by ASTM Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates, is presented each year to undergraduate or graduate students who are pursuing degrees specializing in cement or concrete materials technology or concrete construction.

Persun was awarded the prestigious fellowship from a field of students from universities around the country. The award consists of a $9,000 fellowship, which he can use for research related activities and travel to an ASTM meeting.

Persun, who earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Clarkson in 2008, began his concrete research in 2006 as an undergraduate researcher with Prof. Narayanan Neithalath of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Persun is pursuing his master’s degree in civil engineering, specializing in concrete materials under the supervision of Neithalath. His current research focuses on experimental and modeling studies of the electrical response of concretes so as to develop in-place sensing systems.

His past research work has focused on vitreous calcium alumino silicate (VCAS) as a novel pozzolanic material in concrete, and self-consolidating concretes (SCC). He has published two papers in Cement and Concrete Research and Transportation Research Record.

Persun has been on the dean’s list and received the George A. Gray Endowed Fellowship.

ASTM International was established in 1898 and is one of the largest international standards development and delivery systems in the world. ASTM International meets the World Trade Organization (WTO) principles for the development of international standards: coherence, consensus, development dimension, effectiveness, impartiality, openness, relevance and transparency. ASTM standards are accepted and used in research and development, product testing, quality systems and commercial transactions around the globe.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in six alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world’s pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and health sciences, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
