Three Clarkson University Offices Combine to Assure Student Success

Three Clarkson University offices that are key to the success of students have combined into one new Student Success Center.

First Year Advising/University Studies, Accommodative Services and Trio-Student Support Services now share a newly remodeled space in Clarkson’s Educational Resources Center (ERC).

Over the next year, the three distinct offices will transform operationally, as well, into the Student Success Center.

Nationally, the formation of centers like this is a new trend as retention becomes more important to colleges and universities, and the subject of many conferences and articles.

"The new center will focus on creating initiatives that have a positive impact on each student’s individual success and retention," says Vice President for University Outreach and Student Affairs Kathryn B. Johnson. "The Student Success Center will support all students in a proactive and supportive environment as they work toward their degrees."

The center will focus on a comprehensive academic monitoring system, as well being a clearly marked pathway for students to get help. Students will be able to come to the center and receive well-coordinated access to tutoring, academic counseling, advising services, and accommodations for students with disabilities.

Catherine Clark, newly appointed associate vice president of the Student Success Center, will lead the unit. Clark was director of Student Support Services.

"The entire Clarkson community is integral to the success of students," says Clark. "The center will work collaboratively with departments so that students will have a successful academic career."

"The idea for the center came about through a strategic planning process by our Student Affairs staff. Our goal is for the center to enhance the student experience and become a key component in increasing the retention of our students."

First Year Advising/University Studies is directed by Catherine Avadikian, who brings over 25 years of student advising experience. Accommodative Services is directed by Sheila McCarthy, who specializes in assuring access for students with disabilities. Trio-Student Support Services is managed by Clark.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in six alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world’s pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and health sciences, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
