The Science Museum of Minnesota has announced that artist and Clarkson University Assistant Professor Dave Beck has been named the 2010 Artist-in-Residence at their St. Croix Watershed Research Station.

The interdisciplinary arts and sciences program provides residencies for artists and writers at the museum’s scientific research station on the St. Croix River. Participants have an opportunity to interact with environmental scientists and to create links between their art, the natural world and the sciences.smm

As part of the program, artists are encouraged to design an outreach project to share their work with the local community. Beck will be in residence at the museum for the month of July.

The program, also known as Artist at Pine Needles, provides housing facilities for the artist at the James Taylor Dunn Pine Needles Cabin, located along the river. Dunn was a noted historian of the St. Croix River Valley, and this program fulfills his wishes that this property be used as a scholarly and artistic retreat.

Beck directs Clarkson’s Digital Arts & Sciences program, which fosters collaboration between the sciences and arts. In past projects, Beck has used rapid-prototyping (3D printing) technology to create sculptural installations based on GPS data.

He was recently honored by the National Science Foundation and the Journal Science with an honorable mention award in the International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge for his work on the work "Jellyfish Burger."

While at Pine Needles, Beck plans to create 3D animations based on the river and the area’s logging history. These pieces will be exhibited as an installation at SUNY Potsdam’s Gibson Gallery in September.
