At its spring meeting this past weekend, Thomas E. Holliday assumed the chair of the Clarkson University board of trustees. He was named chair-elect and vice chair at the board’s winter meeting in anticipation of becoming chair when Chairman Everett G. Foster’s term ended in October. However, Foster’s passing in February necessitated Holliday assuming the chair earlier than planned.Thomas E. Holliday Assumes Chair of Clarkson University Board of Trustees

"Rett was more than a great chairman for Clarkson," said Holliday of Foster. "He was a man on a mission. The mission, which he pursued with a passion, was to promote Clarkson’s academic excellence in a quality educational environment. Rett’s leadership and drive will be sorely missed but the mission will continue. He would expect nothing less. I look forward to being part of that mission and working with my fellow trustees, President Collins and the rest of the Clarkson family."

Holliday has been a trustee since 2000 and has served as the board’s secretary since 2004. He has chaired the audit and compensation committees, and served on the executive, academic affairs and student affairs committees.

Holliday recently retired as a partner in the law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, where he served as co-chair of the firm’s business crimes and investigations practice group. Holliday’s legal career has put him at the center of a number of high-profile cases, including those involving aerospace companies, health care organizations, transportation systems and various environmental issues.

He received his bachelor of arts degree with honors from Stanford University, where he was selected to Phi Beta Kappa, and his juris doctorate degree from the University of Southern California School of Law, where he was awarded the Order of the Coif. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and in 1997 received the Criminal Defense Lawyer of the Year Award from the Century City Bar Association. He is listed among the Best Lawyers in America, and among Lawdragon’s national survey of the 500 leading trial lawyers.

Holliday is strongly committed to giving back to the community. He is the former chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles, and past chair of the Federal Bar Association in Los Angeles. His most recent community involvement is as a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of U.S. Vets, an organization which provides housing and education for 3,000 veterans a day. He also serves on the Los Angeles Police Department Memorial Foundation. In 2009, Holliday and his wife, Stacy D. Phillips, were jointly honored by the Anti-Defamation League with its Jurisprudence Award recognizing their commitment to community service.

Tom and Stacy reside in Beverly Hills, Calif.
