Tom Langen Promoted to Full Professor at Clarkson University

Clarkson University President Tony Collins has announced that Tom Langen has been promoted from associate professor to full professor of biology in the School of Arts & Sciences. Promotion to professor is considered to be virtually the highest honor that a university can bestow upon its faculty.

Tom LangenLangen received a bachelor of science degree in biology (with honors) from Purdue University and a Ph.D. in biology from the University of California, San Diego. He completed his postdoctoral work at the University of California, Los Angeles.

He also worked as an agroforestry extension agent while serving as a volunteer in the Peace Corps in Burkina Faso, West Africa.

Langen's research and teaching interests include animal behavior, conservation science and ecology. Currently, Langen is working on funded projects that are focused on the wetland restoration, environmental management of roads, and habitat management for various threatened species.

He is on the editorial board of the Journal Environmental Management, and has been involved in a number of national educational and research projects with the National Center for Ecological Assessment and Synthesis, Ecological Society of America (ESA), Network of Conservation Educators and Practitioners (NCEP), DataOne, and other organizations.

He was a Fulbright Scholar at the National University of Costa Rica, and continues to conduct professional development workshops in Latin America on the environmental impact of infrastructure. His research has been featured in over 50 publications.

Langen has co-directed various summer research programs and conducted K-12 professional development workshops at Clarkson, and has helped design and instruct the Clarkson Adirondack Semester and River U programs.

He has received a Clarkson University Student Association Outstanding Teaching Award, Clarkson Outstanding Advisor Award, and the Presidential Award from the Society of American Naturalists. He has also been named the NCEP Professor of the Month and an ESA Education Scholar. He has directed research of over 100 undergraduate and graduate students in his lab.
