Clarkson University Professor Debuts New Animation at Toronto Exhibition

Clarkson University Assistant Professor of Digital Arts Alex Lee is exhibiting a new animation from now until Friday, Oct. 17, at Trinity Square Video in Toronto.

Alex Lee's animation Lee's animation, "Lucid Dreaming," is a two-channel, double-sided, synced looping video featuring virtual Sigmund Freud ruminating on artificial dolls and automatons through passages of E.T.A. Hoffman's story "Der Sandmann," while navigating through 19th century-inspired dream sequence landscapes. The animation runs for 9 minutes, 30 seconds.

"The abject nature of the dialogue from the true voice of Freud serves to highlight artifice," Lee said. "Particular sections of passages selected focus on the character Olympia, who is revealed to be an automaton in Hoffman's story. Freud references Der Sandmann heavily in his 1919 essay 'The Uncanny,' ruminating on the wax-work figures, artificial dolls and automatons, playing at the notion of perceived agency within avatars, self and the other."

For this exhibition, Lee acknowledges contributors Sara Hanehan for modeling and texturing assistance, John G. Hampton for facial animating and lens flare assistance, Chandra Boulicon for female voice acting, Dean Hayze for male voice acting, Puppy Machine Productions for dialogue recording and Alex Nagy for installation design.

Lee has held numerous solo and group exhibits across the United States, as well as abroad, earning multiple scholarships and awards. He has lectured on computer graphics and has written extensively in art publications.

Trinity Square VideoSculptural Video is the latest of Trinity Square Video's series of themed commissions aimed at exploring the multiple dimensions of video in contemporary artistic practices.
