Sur Appointed Assistant Professor of Biology at Clarkson University

Shantanu Sur has been appointed assistant professor of biology at Clarkson University.

Shantanu Sur He received his bachelor in medicine and surgery degree from N.R.S. Medical College, University of Calcutta. He received his master of science degree in medical science and technology from the Indian Institute of Technology. In 2008, he received his Ph.D. from the School of Medical Science and Technology, Indian Institute of Technology, in collaboration with the Brain Science Institute, RIKEN, Japan.

Before coming to this post, he was a post-doctoral fellow at the Institute for BioNanotechnology in Medicine at Northwestern University. His research focused on the design of self-assembled peptide biomaterials and exploring their potential for the treatment of neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and spinal cord injury. Prior to that, he was a research scientist at the Laboratory for Memory and Learning, Brain Science Institute, in Japan. While pursuing his doctoral degree, he also studied the role of the extracellular matrix on the development of Purkinje neurons.

In 2013, he was a guest lecturer on biomaterials in the Material Science Department at Northwestern University. He has experience in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students from Northwestern and clinical experience as an intern and medical officer in India.

He has written and co-written numerous articles published in peer reviewed journals. He has also made presentations at academic conferences abroad as well as around the United States, including invited seminars in 2012 at Clarkson.

Sur's awards and honors include the Institute Silver Medal from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, for excellence in academic performance at master's level. He received a college scholarship from N.R.S. Medical College, University of Calcutta for excellence in academic performance.

He is a member of the Society for Neuroscience and the Materials Research Society.
