Clarkson University President Tony Collins Named New York State Extraordinary Broadband Leader

Clarkson University President Tony Collins has been named a New York State Extraordinary Broadband Leader.

Clarkson University President Tony CollinsHe was recognized this summer by New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York State Broadband Program Office Director David Salway for his efforts to help expand broadband in New York State and his extraordinary broadband leadership.

"On behalf of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, Lt. Governor Robert Duffy, and New York State, I congratulate you on your recognition as a 2014 New York State Extraordinary Broadband Leader," said New York State Broadband Program Office Director David Salway in a message to Collins. "This year's Broadband Champions demonstrated outstanding achievements within the broadband industry, and it was my pleasure to present you with this award.

"The leadership you continue to display has had a significant impact advancing broadband access and adoption within our state. I applaud you for your perseverance, innovation, and for forging the necessary partnerships needed to help bridge the digital divide in New York State."

Currently serving as Clarkson's 16th president, Collins is a regional and national advocate for higher education - industrial partnerships that couple research discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise for commercialization and economic development with a focus on advancing sustainable energy solutions and environmental technology innovation.

"Dr. Collins has been a great partner to New York State in advancing broadband initiatives and to our office," said New York State Broadband Program Office Broadband Outreach Director Angela Liotta. "The select few individuals recognized have been partners in helping to advance New York State as a best practice model for other states as it relates to expanding broadband access and adoption; have been instrumental in advancing Governor Cuomo’s broadband agenda; and have demonstrated outstanding achievements within the broadband industry."

Governor Cuomo appointed Collins in 2011 to serve as co-chair for the North Country Regional Economic Development Council. Collins also served on a commission established by Governor Cuomo in 2012 to investigate and study utility companies’ storm preparation and management; and to recommend reforms to overhaul regulation of the entire system to better deal with emergencies. In May, President Barack Obama nominated Collins to serve on the Advisory Board of the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation.

Collins is the also the president of the Seaway Private Equity Corporation that invests in new technology companies based in St. Lawrence County, New York, and is a member of NYSERDA’s Technology & Market Development Advisory Committee which provides technical and policy guidance to NYSERDA on energy and environmental research and market development initiatives.
