Ajit Achuthan Receives Tenure & Promotion to Associate Professor at Clarkson University

Clarkson University President Tony Collins has announced that Ajit Achuthan has been granted tenure and promoted from assistant professor to associate professor of mechanical & aeronautical engineering in the Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering.

Ajit AchuthanAchuthan joined Clarkson in 2009. He received his bachelor of technology degree in civil engineering from Calicut University in India, master of science in aerospace engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, master of engineering in civil engineering from the National University of Singapore, and his Ph.D. in aeronautics and astronautics from Purdue University.

Before coming to Clarkson, Achuthan was an instructor and post-doctoral fellow with the School of Aeronautics & Astronautics at Purdue University and a mechanical engineer at the General Electric Global Research Center in Niskayuna, N.Y.
Achuthan’s research interest lies in the general area of solid mechanics. Specific research problems that he currently focuses on include material microstructure and residual stress evolution under severe environmental conditions as in additive manufacturing; crystal plasticity finite element modeling; nanoscale material instability; and acoustic metamaterials.

Achuthan has published 16 peer-reviewed journal articles, and holds five patents. He has presented his research work in many international conferences. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Materials Research Society and Society of Experimental Mechanics.

His research funding of about $720,000 in the past five years was mainly sponsored by NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research and Development Authority) and GE. Achuthan has pursued collaborative research with national laboratories and industries such as NASA, Oak Ridge National Lab, Brookhaven National Lab, GE and United Technologies.

He is a recipient of the NASA John Glenn Research Center Summer Faculty Fellowship in 2012, and his poster presentation on acoustic metamaterials was selected among the top three out of 200-plus posters presented at ASME IMECE congress at Denver in 2011.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world's pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and the health professions, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
