Maria Gracheva Receives Tenure & Promotion to Associate Professor at Clarkson University

Clarkson University President Tony Collins has announced that Maria Gracheva has been granted tenure and promoted from assistant professor to associate professor of physics in the School of Arts & Sciences.

Maria GrachevaGracheva joined Clarkson in 2008. She received her master of science and doctoral degrees in solid state physics from Moscow State Engineering Physics Institute (MEPhI) in Russia.

Gracheva has taught solid state physics, biophysics, computer modeling in physics and physics for life sciences among other courses at Clarkson, incorporating whenever possible modern problems and questions into the educational curriculum. Many undergraduate students have been involved in her research group since 2008.

Gracheva's research expertise is in solid state physics, engineering physics, biophysics and the use of computer simulations in physics.

She has received National Science Foundation (NSF) support in the form of the CAREER Award and an EAGER award (Early-Concept Grants for Exploratory Research) for her research on electrically tunable membranes for characterization, separation and filtering of ions and biomolecules such as DNA and proteins.

Gracheva has published more than 30 peer-reviewed journal articles; has one patent and three book chapters; conference papers and reports; and has delivered numerous national and international presentations at professional conferences throughout the world, including France, Belgium, Italy, Russia and Ireland. She has secured over $700,000 in funding from the NSF and other agencies.

In addition, she edited a book, Nanopore-based Technology, for Humana Press, a division of Springer.

A reviewer for The ASC Nano, Nano Letters, Small, Physical Biology, The Journal of Computational Electronics and many other publications, Gracheva is a regular proposal reviewer of the NSF and was listed in Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, 10th Anniversary Edition, 2008-2009.

Before coming to Clarkson, Gracheva worked as a postdoctoral associate at Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign), in the Department of Mathematics at University of Minnesota (Minneapolis) and in the Physics Department at Lehigh University.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world's pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and the health professions, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
