Ryan Zroka Appointed Assistant Professor of History at Clarkson University

Ryan Zroka has been appointed assistant professor of history at Clarkson University.

Ryan ZrokaHe received his bachelor of arts degree in history from the University of California, Los Angeles, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He received his master of arts in European history and his Ph.D. in modern European history, both from the University of California at San Diego.

Zroka's particular areas of interest include modern German history and war studies. His doctoral dissertation was “If Only This War Would End: German Soldiers at the End of the First World War.”

Before coming to this post at Clarkson, he was fleet seminar professor at the Naval War College, San Diego campus. He also was a lecturer at California State University San Marcos, San Diego State University, University of California at San Diego, and the University of San Diego. Courses he has taught include world civilizations, war & society: the Second World War, war & peace in the modern world, Europe after 1945, German humanities, and war strategy seminars.

Zroka speaks English, French and German and has published articles and given talks at professional conferences about a social history of the German army.

His honors include honorable mention for the Dryden Hull Dissertation Award in 2013, and an invitation to the German Historical Institute Transatlantic Doctoral Seminar in 2010. He was awarded a graduate research fellowship to the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst in 2009-2010 and a UCSD travel award in 2009. He also was awarded a pre-dissertation research fellowship from the Berkeley Institute of European and German Studies.

Zroka is a member of the Society For Military History, International Society for First World War Studies, and the American Historical Association.
