Clarkson University's Backus Appointed to U.S. Green Building Council New York Upstate Market Leadership Advisory Board

Clarkson University's Erik C. Backus has been appointed to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) New York Upstate Market Leadership Advisory Board.

Erik BackusBackus, the Howard E. Lechler Endowed director of Construction Engineering Management (CEM) in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, says he will bring a passion for sustainability in the build environment to his new role.

"Buildings and infrastructure have a dramatic impact on our planet," said Backus, who is also an affiliate faculty member of Clarkson's Institute for a Sustainable Environment (ISE). "Buildings contribute some 38 percent of carbon emissions and use the lion's share of electrical power. If we are to build a sustainable future, and combat the ill effects of climate change in our communities, we need to build better."

Backus’ appointment on the Market Leadership Advisory Board will enable him to help shape the future of sustainable construction in Upstate New York and beyond.

"As we educate students in the means, methods and technology involved in the Construction industry, the Clarkson CEM program seeks to inculcate a sense of care for the triple bottom line," he said.

The USGBC is made up of tens of thousands of member organizations, chapters and student and community volunteers that are moving the building industry forward in a way that has never been seen before. The USGBC is a diverse group of builders and environmentalists, corporations and nonprofits, teachers and students, lawmakers and citizens that share the same vision of a sustainable built environment for all within the next generation.

The New York Upstate chapter promotes environmentally responsible, healthy and profitable places to live, work, learn, shop, and heal in 53 counties across New York State.

Clarkson University, a member of the USGBC, is a leader in sustainability education and offers numerous opportunities for its graduates to make positive impacts in our economy and the environment.

"Clarkson and the Institute for a Sustainable Environment provide educational and research resources that are making a real difference around the world, but also locally here in New York State," said Susan E. Powers, the Jean '79 and Robert '79 Spence Professor in Sustainable Environmental Systems and interim director of the ISE.
