Clarkson University Welcomes Philpott-Jones as Chair and Associate Professor of Bioethics

Clarkson University has welcomed Sean M. Philpott-Jones as chair and associate professor of bioethics.

Sean M. Philpott-JonesPhilpott-Jones was previously a faculty member at Union Graduate College (UGC), which merged into Clarkson in February. He is based at Clarkson's Capital Region Campus in Schenectady, N.Y., the former UGC.

His academic interests include environmental ethics and social justice, community-based participatory research, and informed consent.

He holds several patents, has published extensively, and is actively conducting research on HIV ethics and prevention and on water contamination in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities.

In addition to his academic and administrative responsibilities, Philpott-Jones also directs the Department of Bioethics’ two Fogarty-funded training programs, which provide graduate-level training in research ethics to fellows from low- and middle-income countries in Eastern Europe and in the Caribbean Basin.

In addition to his post at Clarkson, Philpott-Jones is an adjunct professor of public health at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health; an adjunct faculty member at the Global Institute for Health and Human Rights at SUNY Albany; an adjunct professor of bioethics at the St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada; and an adjunct faculty member of the Department of Philosophy at Union College.

Philpott-Jones also serves as chair of the Institutional Biosafety Committee, Pulmokine Inc.; is a member of the Institutional Animal Use and Care Committee, Pulmokine Inc.; former chair, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Human Subjects Review Board; and former chair of the American Public Health Association Ethics Section.

He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Public Health Association, American Society for Bioethics and Humanities, Association of Bioethics Program Directors, Bioethics Society of the English-Speaking Caribbean, International AIDS Society, International Association of Bioethics, Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research, and Society of Research Administrators International.

Philpott-Jones received his bachelor of arts degree in biological anthropology and his bachelor of science in microbiology from the University of California at San Diego, his master of science degree in bioethics from Union Graduate College, and his Ph.D. in public health microbiology from the University of California at Berkeley.
