Patrisse Cullors Awarded Clarkson University Honorary Degree

Patrisse K. Cullors, director for truth and reinvestment at the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, was awarded an honorary doctor of science degree at Clarkson University's 123rd Commencement on Saturday, May 7.

CullorsThe degree was awarded for “her dedication to humanity and justice; for her commitment to equality and inclusion; for her entrepreneurial spirit that sparked action and imagination across the country and around the world; and for her efforts to strengthen the bonds that unite us all."

Dedicated to social justice, she is also a founder and board member of the Los Angeles based organization Dignity and Power Now. At the age of 22, she was recognized with the Mario Savio Young Activist Award for her work as a transformative organizer.

A Fulbright Scholarship recipient, Cullors received her degree in religion and philosophy from the University of California, Los Angeles.

In the summer of 2013, she co-founded the hashtag Black Lives Matter and its online community, which has since grown to an international organization addressing racism around the world.

Cullors was named an NAACP History Maker, a finalist for The Advocate’s Person of the Year, a Civil Rights Leader for the 21st century by the Los Angeles Times, was invited to the White House, and was featured in the 2015 POLITICO 50 guide to the thinkers, doers and visionaries transforming American politics.

In 2016, Fortune magazine named her to its annual list of the World’s Greatest Leaders. Google awarded her the Racial Justice Grant to support her ongoing Ella Baker Center project developing a rapid response network that will mobilize communities threatened by violence. She is also supporting the ACLU’s development of their Mobile Justice app.
