Clarkson University Computer Engineering Student Publishes Paper on Optical Networks

Zachary I. Rauen '16 published a research article on optical networks in an established journal while he was still an undergraduate at Clarkson University.

Zachary RauenRauen, of Ontario, N.Y., was a computer engineering senior when the article was submitted and revised. He will begin the electrical and computer engineering master's program at Clarkson in fall 2016.

The article, "Resiliency Versus Energy Sustainability in Optical Inter-Datacenter Networks," appears in volume 20 of Optical Switching and Networking, a computer networks journal by Elsevier. The research examines energy efficiency and resiliency under different topological characteristics where datacenters are inter-connected via an elastic optical network backbone.

The article is co-authored by former Clarkson University Assistant Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering Burak Kantarci and University of Ottawa Distinguished University Professor and Canada Research Chair Hussein T. Mouftah. The research is a collaboration between the two institutions.

The paper states that as cloud computing becomes a forefront of business models, keeping operational expenses low is one of the main challenges and goals of operators. Expenses for operators come directly from energy consumption and indirectly through service downtime -- such as losing customers or paying penalties.

The researchers present a benchmark scheme that aims at minimum outage probability provision and a compromising scheme that aims at resilient provisioning with minimum power consumption. The paper shows that electric bills of network operators can be cut up to 50 percent if they adopt this method.

Clarkson University educates the leaders of the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as an owner, CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. With its main campus located in Potsdam, N.Y., and additional graduate program and research facilities in the Capital Region and Beacon, New York, Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university with signature areas of academic excellence and research directed toward the world's pressing issues. Through more than 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, education, sciences and the health professions, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and innovation with enterprise.
