Matthis Appointed Clinical Assistant Professor of Physician Assistant Studies at Clarkson University

Katharine Matthis was appointed clinical assistant professor of physician assistant studies at Clarkson University, earlier this year, when she started teaching.

Katharine MatthisMatthis received dual bachelor of arts in degrees in biology and Spanish from Hamilton College, and a bachelor of science degree in physician assistant sciences from Saint Francis College.

Before coming to this position at Clarkson University, she provided family medicine for nearly 20 years as a physician assistant. She provided a full range of medical care to patients of all ages and economic backgrounds, taking medical histories, ordering/interpreting diagnostic tests, diagnosing their conditions and implementing treatment plans, follow-up care and referrals as indicated. She focused on preventive and mental health, patient education, and chronic care needs.

She has worked in healthcare facilities around Northern New York; at Community Health of the North Country in Gouverneur, where she provided primary pediatric services; at Watkins Student Health Services in Potsdam, providing primary care services for SUNY Potsdam’s roughly 4,200 students; and at Edwards-Knox school-based health center in Edwards, where she was the sole medical provider for 530 students in pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. Prior to that, she worked with Canton Family Physicians.

She is certified by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants and is a fellow in the American Academy of Physician Assistants.

In addition to her clinical hands-on expertise, Matthis is experienced in specialized healthcare computer programs.
