Clarkson University Professor & Students Attend NANOG College Immersion Program

Clarkson University Assistant Professor of Computer Science Yaoqing Liu and five students received travel grants from the North American Network Operators' Group (NANOG) to attend the College Immersion Program in Dallas, Texas, this fall.

NANOG 2016The program provides a platform for college students to learn about real world computer network operations.

Sponsors include information technology companies and network service providers such as Google, Microsoft, Netflix and Comcast. Representatives attend the program to exchange technical ideas and share industrial experiences.

"Students can go there to ask technical questions about network operations and the internet of things, and they have the opportunity to get advice about their career," Liu said.

This is the second year Clarkson has participated in the College Immersion Program. Computer science student Graham Northup '17, of Galway, N.Y.; computer science student Onyekachukwu Onyerikwu '17 of Stratford, Conn.; computer science student Kyle Pedersen '17 of Sylvan Beach, N.Y.; environmental science and engineering Ph.D. student David Gower of Cortland, N.Y.; and electrical and computer engineering Ph.D. student Keivan Bahmani, of Tehran, Iran, attended the program with Liu.

In addition to networking and learning opportunities for students, Liu said educators can benefit from the College Immersion Program as sponsors share real data for research, donate old equipment or offer research funds.
