Clarkson University Business Dean Elected Incoming Chair of Women Administrators in Management Education

Clarkson University School of Business Dean Dayle Smith was elected incoming chair of the Women Administrators in Management Education (WAME) Affinity Group at the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International Conference and Annual Meeting, this spring.
Dayle SmithWAME, more than 600 members strong, serves women administrators in AACSB member schools, including deans, associate deans, assistant deans, program directors, center directors and academic department chairs.

The group facilitates networking, communications, and relationship-building among women administrators and to the AACSB International membership. Further, the group supports professional and career development opportunities for current and future women administrators and cultivates the growing gender diversity of business school leaders.
WAME provides support and programming at the annual deans conferences and meetings; the international annual conference and meeting; and assessment and associate deans meetings organized by the AACSB. The affinity group addresses key issues of concern, including strategies for successful leadership; gender equity and equality in business schools; managing career paths; and related issues around diversity and inclusion.  
Smith has served on the WAME  Steering Committee supporting programming activity over the last three years, working with the AACSB and her fellow business deans from around the world to help strengthen the membership and better meet the professional needs of its members. Smith also has been active in the Northeast Business Deans Association (NEBDA) regional group, serving as a program chair, vice president, and, most recently, past president.  

Twenty-five years ago, only six deans in AACSB accredited institutions were women. Ten years later, 12 percent of business school deans were women with the number reaching 19.9 percent in 2015. Female deanships at AACSB member schools are now at 25 percent, up from only 8 percent when the organization started collecting this data in 2000.

"I am inspired by a number of strong women leaders and advocates who have served as WAME chairs since the group's inception. As I collaborate with my colleagues across the globe, we will continue to provide opportunities for information exchange, supporting women leaders in their business school careers, expanding networking capabilities, and furthering the engagement of women in business school and AACSB leadership roles," Smith said on leading WAME for the next academic year. "It is critically important for us to strive for gender equity as educators and role models for all of our students -- the next generation of business leaders.
"Diversity and inclusion are core values of AACSB, and the new strategic change agenda promotes initiatives to significantly increase opportunities for business schools to understand, identify, and model best practices in enhancing and sustaining diversity," said AACSB Executive Vice President and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Advocate Christine Clements at the annual meeting earlier this year.
